Explaining Adult Behavior

Recently Grandma has come to stay with us trying to get out of a long alcoholic-abusive relationship with her husband- our children's grandfather. We all still love Grandpa but the kids just can't understand what is going on. He's never shown his abusive side to them and they don't understand why Grandma is staying with us and crying a lot, and my 9 year old son is very concerned. He actually did see Grandpa's angry side once. He wants to know what is going on and we aren't sure what to explain to him beyond just saying Grandpa hasn't been very nice to Grandma so she needs to stay with us. He's very persistent with his questions and picks up on the adult conversation going on around though we try not to talk about it around the kids. Suggestions?
