He Won't Starve

Question

We have a 34 month old son, William, who is normally a pretty laid back and compliant kid. Meal time, however, has become an absolute battleground. We've tried everything, including asking him if he wants to eat and if he says no, just letting it go (so as not to draw attention to it), but it ended up feeling way too permissive and it turned in to play time for him. We really want him to try everything on his plate, so the last 2 nights we have made him sit in his seat. This has resulted in a temper tantrum both nights. I just read your teaspoon plan, and I love it. However what do we do when tomorrow evening we sit him down to eat and he immediately starts crying? Let him get up immediately? Make him sit for a certain period of time? HELP!
