Patient potty training.

Question

My 21 month old son began potty training last week using the N75 method. He does not want to sit on the seat very long or use the small potty chair. So far training has been on the toilet. When the bell rings he sits, then stands up says he is done, but has not eliminated. My concern is getting him to sit until he will go. I have had success one time in 8 days, dad has had a few more in the evening, and I'm getting so frustrated. Do we need a barrier? How long should he be gated in if I know he will potty soon? He will potty in his underwear and tell me there is a mess but makes no move to the seat.
