23 month old Son Potty Training Troubles

Question

We are on day 3 of potty training our 23-mo-old son. We used your method for our daughter at 22-mos and she pretty much had it at day 3 (by using the potty bell and barricade). Like with our daughter, our son wouldn't stay put on the potty in the kitchen after the first day, so we went to the barricades on day 2. We've had maybe 4 successes (usually first thing in the morning or right after nap), but the rest of the time, he just eliminates in the barricaded room, next to the potty. We ask him where potty goes, he points to the potty, and then calmly clean up as we tell him he'll do better next time.

So, when the potty bell goes off, we take him to the barricaded area and tell him the potty bell said it's time to make some tee-tee or poo in the potty, and he can come out when he does. He'll make the tee-tee, but it's not in the potty (which seems intentional, obviously). If we let him out after he does this, it seems we're teaching him that as long as he eliminates anywhere (not necessarily in the potty), he can come out.

Not sure what to do--do we just leave him in the barricaded room until he produces *in* the potty? (This is what we did on day 2 for our daughter, and it worked because she didn't like being separated from the family, but he doesn't seem to care. Well, he cares, but not enough to go in the potty.)
