Take a Deep Breath, Don't Micromanage Potty Training

Question

We're on day 5 of potty-training our 18-month-old son according to Toilet Training Without Tears (which I've read several times now), and I'm wondering if I'm micromanaging. I think I have this fear that if I'm not on top of helping him get to the potty in time, he's not going to have success. One morning, I watched him closely, used the potty-bell, got him to sit several times, and we had several happy-accidents in the potty (that wouldn't have happened if I hadn't been making sure that he was stopping to sit when he needed to). That afternoon, I had to get some things done, so I was more hands-off (though I had the potty-bell set at 60-min intervals), and we ended up with puddle after puddle on the floor (which he didn't seem to mind). Is that what I'm supposed to be doing? Hands off? Is it lots of those kind of mistakes that will eventually help him learn, or do I need to be more proactive? I'm a little confused about how involved I should be.
