Sixth Grader Struggling in Math

Question

Hello! My 11 year old 6th grade boy has always been an excellent math student, however since starting 6th grade (about 3 weeks in now), he is "forgetting" basic concepts and making simple problems much more difficult than they are. He is taking hours to complete one worksheet. He is not paying attention to simple details. It's seems a though he is trying to pull a power play with this behavior as he pouts, cries and generally overreacts until my husband helps him (which only seems to make it worse (as I know John would point out!)). Should we set a time limit on his homework or just let him work all night (while pouting and overreacting to get attention and getting every problem wrong)? We want to get this under control sooner than later. Thank you so much!
