Switching from tickets to charts.

Question

My husband and I are switching from the "tickets" system to the "charts" system for our children, ages 5 and 7. I understand that the consequences for lost boxes are not to carry over to the next day.

Every Sunday, we go to my parents' house for supper. The children often misbehave as we are getting ready to leave for my parents' house, while we are there, and on our way home. They don't follow directions the first time (one of the target behaviors) and may do something like repetitively kick the passenger and driver seats that my husband and I are sitting in. I believe they are doing those things because there isn't any time left in the day for consequences. They know they can get away with it since nothing is carried over to the next day. It's their bedtime when we get home so they'll go straight to bed anyway. What consequence should there be for these "late in the day" misbehaviors?

Similarly, the children often slack off during their regular evening chores at home. Immediately after supper, they are supposed to clear the table, set the table with plates and silverware for breakfast, and put away any remaining toys. Immediately after these chores, they get ready for bed. We can cross off a box for not following directions the first time, but again there isn't any time left in the day to enforce consequences. The only thing we can do at that point is not allow them to read books before bed. Please let me know your thoughts.

Thank you.
