20m going to sleep without parents

Question

We recently returned from a vacation where we kept having to bring our 20 month old son into bed with us in the middle of the night because he would scream and we were sharing a room and that was the only thing that would quiet him. Since we've been back, going down to bed has been terrible (previously even on vacation he went down fine without a problem). He screams and screams, and after trying the 5, 10 minute technique for an hour we finally pulled him out and put him on a blanket on the floor. He seems to be fine if we put him on the floor, but one of us has to stay in there with him until he falls asleep. He typically will wake up in the middle of the night, and we have to go back in there and lay with him again. I fear we are creating a dependency by staying in there while he falls asleep, but I'm at a loss of how to get him to lie down and go to sleep without us in there, especially in the middle of the night.I'm also worried about him in the middle of the night walking around hurting himself in his room if he's half-asleep. (he can't open his door, so we just close it and leave the hall light on)
As a side note, his 2-year molars are coming in, and typically he has a few nights of terrible sleep when his teeth come in but this has gone on for over a week now so I'm worried our actions are creating a bad habit instead of being temporary to soothe him!
